Bobby Soobrayan

Bobby Soobrayan

Bobby Soobrayan was appointed Director-General of Basic Education in May 2010. He has been closely involved in education since the beginning of his career first as a Physical Science and Science teacher in Durban in the 1980s, and subsequently as a researcher and lecturer at the then University of Natal.

Bobby Soobrayan also served in the then single Department of Education as deputy director-general responsible for planning and monitoring, and as Director-General at the former South African Management Development Institute. Much of his career has been spent in the field of education, both as a public servant and as a consultant.

Soobrayan has been instrumental in formulating the national Basic Education Action Plan, known as Action Plan to 2014: Towards the Realisation of Schooling 2025, which sets out what the education sector needs to achieve and how to achieve this transformation over the next 15 years.
