Esmael Habtamu Ali

Esmael Habtamu has eight years of experience in eye care research and service delivery. He has coordinated large collaborative research projects on the management of the blinding stage of trachoma, an infectious blinding eye disease. He has delivered surgical service to thousands of people who were at risk of losing their sight from trachoma. Esmael holds a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), UK. Esmael Habtamu Ali is currently a Researcher at the Carter Center in Ethiopia, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he is focused on providing adequate evidence to public health policy makers through his research. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Esmael will lead eye care research projects in Ethiopia and will help his country achieve the World Health Organization led Trachoma Elimination Goal by 2020. Esmael hopes to develop and lead comprehensive eye care research and create a training and service providing an institution that will help alleviate the huge burden of avoidable blindness in his country. He also hopes to train ophthalmic professionals to build an independent sustainable service.
