Bemnet Zegeye Ashenafi
Bemnet Zegeye Ashenafi has over one and a half years’ experience as a general practitioner at the Bichena District Hospital. She currently the heads the in-patient department. She also works for the advancement of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital. She completed research on the determinants of perinatal asphyxia at Bichena Hospital, which serves mothers from 27 surrounding health centers. Based on the result of the research, her team and her developed an action plan aiming to minimize the incidence of perinatal asphyxia. Bemnet Zegeye Ashenafi holds a Doctor of Medicine from the St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College. Bemnet is driven by her love for newborns and has committed her life to caring for them. She hopes to see an Ethiopia where all mothers receive antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care and all newborns are healthy. She also aspires to see well-developed NICUs in all the regions of Ethiopia, both urban and rural. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Bemnet plans to continue her work, striving to decrease neonatal death in Ethiopia.
