Catherine Grenfell

It’s not your ordinary individual who boards a plane to London just because she absolutely has to see Nick Cave, Coldplay and Foo Fighters play live – but then 5FM DJ Catherine loves living life in the fast lane. She’s passionate about everything she turns her hand to – whether it’s transforming her passion for music into a successful radio career, doing adventure sports or helping those less fortunate.

Catherine joined 5FM as a producer in 2001 following several years in the live arena (she studied lighting, sound and stage management). Catherine worked With Mark Gillman (Breakfast show host on 5FM) and then moved to afternoons with DJ Fresh, where she produced and presented the traffic. Catherine also earned her own show (Live)5 where her real passion lies, promoting local music. Catherine has subsequently moved back to the mornings with DJ Fresh on 5FM as Executive Producer.

She has a vast knowledge for radio, which is only enhanced by her extensive interviewing track record (she has chin wagged with everyone from Piet Botha to Zachie Achmad, Charlize Theron, Pieter Dirk Uys, Pink, Arctic Monkeys, Violent Femmes, 3 Doors Down, Groove Armada, Staind, Metallica, Korn, Muse, Chris Cornell, Kaiser Chiefs, 30 seconds To Mars, Good Charlotte, (and many more).Her love of great music, both South African and international, is what makes her who she is and what contributed to such fantastic shows.

“In all honesty I do this because I love it, and I guess that I really wanted to be in a band but never got that chance,” Catherine, who is a trained musician, says.

Alongside her music, Catherine’s adventurous spirit has seen her undertake many escapades, all in the name of great radio. This adventurous rock chick has bungee jumped off the world’s highest bungee bridge, shark-cage dived, abseiled and driven in an off road rally car.
