Braam Malherbe
This Cape Town based extreme adventurer is a committed conservationist, motivational speaker, TV presenter and author of ‘The Great Run’.
Braam Malherbe has been involved in counter-poaching operations, co-founded the Table Mountain National Park’s volunteer fire-fighting unit and is actively involved in numerous activities to protect our precious natural resources.
In 2006 and again in 2008, against the advice of SA’s top medical and sport experts, he – and running partner David Grier – achieved two world firsts by running the entire length of the Great Wall of China – a distance of 4218 kms.(the equivalent of a marathon a day for 98 days) plus they ran the entire coastline of South Africa, a distance of over 3200kms.
The expeditions raised in excess of R2.5 million for Operation Smile which provides corrective surgery for children born with cleft lip and cleft palate disfigurements.
Braam currently features on SABC2’s nature programme 50/50, was voted Men’s Health ‘Unsung Hero’ in 2010, was recently named the Woolworths ‘My Planet’ Ambassador and won SABC3’s Enviropaedia Eco Logic Award in the Category ‘Eco Warrior in 2012’.
At 54, Braam took part in an 768km unassisted ski-race to the South Pole with his friend Peter van Kets, finishing a remarkable 3rd and he continues to challenge all of us, to DO ONE THING (DOT) – to make a positive difference.
