Prof Themba Mosia

Prof Themba Mosia was appointed as Vice-Principal responsible for Student Affairs and Residence Affairs and Accommodation at the University of Pretoria in 2013.

Prior to his appointment as Vice-Principal, he was the Institutional Registrar at Northwest University (NWU), a position which he held from 2008. During his tenure at NWU, he was appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and Training as the Administrator of Tshwane University of Technology and as a member of the Independent Assessor team for the University of Zululand.

Before joining Northwest University, he had gained extensive experience in higher education. This included lecturing full-time at a College of Education (where he was also warden of student residences) and part-time at the University of the North (Qwaqwa Campus) where he held various positions in student administration, which culminated in his appointment as Assistant Registrar. From there he moved to the Medical University of Southern Africa where he became Registrar and was deeply involved with their transformation, merger and restructuring processes. After a stint as Dean of Studies: Higher Education at Educor, a private higher education provider, and thereafter as an independent management consultant, he was appointed as General Manager: Professional Boards at the Health Professions Council of South Africa in 2006. He chaired accreditation visits for medical education programmes in India, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates in 2007.

Prof Mosia’s main areas of research and scientific publications are medical education, governance, quality assurance, management and leadership. He continues to serve on various national committees, including as board member of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). He has performed five institutional audits for the Council on Higher Education, one as chair, since his secondment in 2001 to start the Audit and Evaluation Division, and was treasurer and trustee of the Foundation of Tertiary Education Institutions in the Northern Metropolis (FOTIM).

Prof Mosia is Chairperson of the Statutory Council on Higher Education that advises the Minister on higher education matters and oversees quality assurance arrangements in higher education in South Africa.
