George Mahlalela
Mr George Mahlalela was appointed Director-General in the Department of Transport in February 2010. His qualifications include a BA (Hons) and a management development programme. Mr Mahlalela is a former chief director for the Department of Transport in Kwazulu-Natal, where he managed freight and public transport programmes.
His professional experience includes roles as training programme manager at the University of Durban-Westville, and as local government training manager at the University of the Western Cape where he was responsible for the coordination of specialised programmes for civic organisations across the country. Mr Mahlalela served as technical consultant for the KwaZulu-Natal Housing Board in 1994, and as a board member for the KwaZulu-Natal International Airport Initiative.
His other leadership roles have included acting chairperson of the Umthombo Investments Company (a project for the taxi industry initiated by the Department of Transport), chairperson for the National Taxi Task Team and KwaZulu- Natal Taxi Task Team, and board member of South African Rail Commuter Corporation.
