Angel Blythe Campey
Angel Campey is one of the leading new comedic voices in South Africa. She has appeared on Comedy Central Africa, done a comedy Ted Talk in a sold out Baxter Theatre that streamed to millions online and travels the country appearing in Comedy Clubs, at festivals and MCing. Including comedy at Rocking the Daisies, Synergy Live, MCing Up the Creek, back to back comedy shows at the Darling Voorkamer festival, the Vodacom Funny Festival, and her recent sold out run of her one woman show at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
Angel also writes for the multi award winning TV satire news show, ZAnews which won 7 SAFTAs in 2015, including ‘Best TV Comedy’. She has her own radio show, ‘The Angel Campey Show’ for the last 3 years, on 2oceansvibe that has consistently good listenership. She also works as a voice over artist and makes regular appearances on national radio stations including 5fm, Goodhope FM and Cape Talk.
She talks at high schools about stand-up as a career for women, and turning your comedy into a brand and was one of the Celebrities selected for the 2015 Marie Claire Naked issue in support of Blow the Whistle Campaign, against domestic violence. She was nominated in 2015 by the Department of Arts and Culture for an Mbokodo award, recognising her work for women in Comedy. She is a brand ambassador for Essence Cosmetics and Legs11, recently featured as the lead in the Husky online campaign, collaborates with many fashion designers for her varied appearances and works with many brands in partnerships using her influence on social media to promote them, also getting involved with charities including comedy shows where 100% of the proceeds are donated.
Her one woman show, Yes Really Angel, is directed by comedy legend Nik Rabinowitz and is an autobiographical look at the life of a girl who was given the name of a stripper but possessed no dance skills so turned to stand up. It has toured South Africa from theatre and festivals to rave reviews and sold out audiences. A recent review (2015 NAF), branded her as “comedy for the discerning young South African” because she tackles topical issues from white privilege and racism to the zombie apocalypse and glitter with “a wit and charm that makes her tackle potentially prickly topics in a way that is likeable and funny.”
Her range of comedy stretches from modern life and zombies to conspiracy theories and her hippy mom’s views of the planet, technology, cars and names as well as anecdotes of her time living in Korea. She takes the truth of her life and twists it into her brand of observational comedy in a style that is gender neutral and popular with all ages and kinds of South Africans. Her likeable and affable style of delivery also makes her a popular choice of MC to add personality, wit and sparkle to events.
