Barkot Milkias Shamebo
Barkot Milkias Shamebo is a medical doctor and an assistant professor of Psychiatry at Addis Ababa University‘s College of Health Sciences,Ethiopia. She is currently a consultant psychiatrist and the deputy chair of the Department of Psychiatry. Barkot has been working as a clinician, educator, and researcher for over two years. Barkot is passionate about exploring the unique experiences and needs of neglected population groups dealing with mental health, including women from developing countries, and devising culturally sensitive and relevant interventions. Barkot strives to give back to the community by working with public institutions. Barkot Milkias Shamebo believes that lasting and profound societal impact that extends beyond the walls of clinics will not come solely from scholarly developments. As such, Barkot is committed to developing her leadership qualities through the Leadership Initiative For Young Faculty at the College of Health Sciences. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Barkot plans to share her experience and continue working with the leadership initiative to challenge established healthcare and educational systems and trigger changes that will trickle down to everyday practice and services.
