Damilola Olabisi Akinsulire

Damilola Akinsulire is a medical doctor with over 8 years’ experience in various community oriented programs and projects. She is a consultant public health physician with considerable experience in research, health systems, strengthening, and evidence-based programming. She works at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital applying her research and analytical skills to effectively design and implement programs geared towards sexual health and rights of women, adolescents, and children. Her recent research project was on sexual abuse among adolescents in slum communities in South West Nigeria. Damilola Olabisi Akinsulire is passionate about helping girls and women from low income families and volunteers in her community through a mentorship program to help adolescents develop life skills and learn about their sexuality. As an experienced team worker, she networks with other medical professionals to provide cancer screenings, seminars, and family planning commodities in marginalized communities using low cost measures. Damilola holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Lagos. Here, her research work focused on birth preparedness and complication readiness amongst low income women in Lagos, Nigeria. She is a Sexuality Leadership Development fellow with the African Regional Sexuality Resource Centre, and a member of the West African College of physicians. Damilola has received trainings by the Royal College of Physicians in London on effective programming for HIV, TB, malaria and several trainings on leadership and health management.Damilola is driven by her commitment and passion for universal and equitable health services for women and adolescents and plans to continuously use her medical and public health trainings to promote health policies and culturally sensitive medical protocols for socially marginalized and under-served communities. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Damilola plans to continue to expand her work in reproductive health with a focus on policy and advocacy for sexual health and rights of women, adolescents and children. She wishes to collaborate and strategically position herself at the forefront of policy formulation, and improve translation of health policies to effective programs in Nigeria.
