Dr Neva Seidman Makgetla

Dr Neva Seidman Makgetla was appointed deputy director-general: Economic Policy in July 2010. She holds a BA (Hons) from Harvard University and a PhD in Economics from Berlin. Dr Makgetla was lead economist for the development planning division at the Development Bank of Southern Africa between 2008 and 2010 and worked at the Presidency on sector strategies between 2006 and 2008.

Dr Neva Seidman Makgetla served as policy coordinator for fiscal and monetary policy between 2000 and 2006 at the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and also worked for the National Labour and Economic Development Institute which is associated with Cosatu. Dr Makgetla lectured in Economics at various universities in Africa and the United States between 1982 and 1994. This included the position of senior lecturer at the University of the Witswatersrand in South Africa between 1991 and 1994.

During this period she was a member of the Department of Economic Planning for the ANC and in 1993 was economics coordinator of the Reconstruction and Development Programme.
