FRANCIS CRONJE
Francis Cronjé is the MD at FrancisCronje and is an information governance specialist with a strong legal background and years of practical experience. He advises large entities – ranging from banks and insurance houses to medical administrators – on the powerful impact of POPI and associated information laws.
Prior to forming franciscronje.com, he served as a specialist legal consultant on data protection and IT advisory at KPMG South Africa, where he headed up data protection as a service line to clients.
Apparently, his corporate clients refer to him as “The Cleaner”…
He obtained an LLM degree from the University of Oslo’s Norwegian Research Centre for Computers and Law, specialising in data protection, and advised Parliament on POPI, where he served on the relevant portfolio, technical and NCOP committees.
He is the co-author of the popular book, POPI – 101 Q&A, published by JUTA Law, and also co-authored and co-edited the textbook, Cyberlaw@SA. Cronjé is the International Association of Privacy Professional’s KnowledgeNet chairperson in Cape Town, having been certified as an Information Privacy Professional (CIPP and CIPP/IT respectively). He also serves as an adjudicator and appeal panellist at WASPA and ISPA.
He was a part-time lecturer at the University of the Western Cape, and also provided lectures on cyber law at the University of Cape Town and Wits University. He has written numerous articles and is a regular speaker on POPI and ICT law.
