Gugulethu Ndebele

Gugulethu Ndebele is deputy director-general in the Department of Basic Education responsible for social mobilisation and support services. She is responsible for mobilising and managing partnerships in support of education. In addition, she is responsible for programmes aimed at promoting learner wellbeing, health, poverty alleviation, social cohesion, sport and culture. She holds a certificate in Adult Basic Education and Training (Abet), postgraduate diploma in Adult Education (HdipEd.Ad), an MSc in Organisational Change and Development and completed the Management Advancement Programme (MAP).

Gugulethu Ndebele is enrolled at the University of KwaZulu-Natal for a Masters in Health Promotion and Communication. After working as a manager for Abet at the Transnet Training Board, Gugu joined the then Department of Education as director for Abet, a position she occupied for five years. She was responsible for the setting up of the South African Literacy Initiative, a prelude to the Kha ri Gude Mass Literacy campaign. She has also worked as director for strategic planning in the then Department of Education and later as chief director for special programmes in education and FET Colleges. As chief director FET colleges and youth development, she was responsible for the R1,9 billion College Recapitalisation project. In addition, she was responsible for the setting up of Youth Advisory Centres in FET Colleges (in partnership with Umsobomvu Youth Fund).
