Hazel Wienand

Technical Specialist Anglo American

Hazel Wienand is a Technical Specialist at Anglo American with nine years’ experience in the minerals & metals processing industry. She graduated from the University of Pretoria with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and an honours degree in water treatment. Hazel has designed, commissioned, and performed studies for copper, chromite, platinum and gold processing plants, throughout Africa, taking on both technical and project management roles.

Hazel is passionate about the possibilities that lie ahead for the mining industry in the 4th industrial revolution. She is eager to make mineral and metals processing more efficient, sustainable, and safe. Her goal is to make processing more accessible, to give fellow engineers the ability to focus on value adding activities that allow them to reach their full potential and give them a greater sense of purpose. Hazel’s current focus is digital transformation of processing facilities, using data to enable remote and predictive operations, as well as coaching colleagues on how the transformation will change the way they work.
