Hiwot Amare Hailemariam
Hiwot Amare Hailemariam has over three years’ experience in internal medicine and works as an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Jimma University, Ethiopia, where they focus on teaching undergraduate medical students patient care and research. She is primarily interested in cardiology and global health. She also volunteers as a mentor for medical students to help them with different problems they face during medical school. Hiwot Amare Hailemariam holds a medical doctor degree, a specialty certificate in Internal Medicine and a certificate to perform trans-thoracic echocardiograms. Her interest in cardiology and global health is driven by the increasing burden of patients affected by cardiovascular diseases in Ethiopia. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Hiwot wants to work as an advocate on prevention of rheumatic heart disease and plans to improve the care of patients affected by the disease by raising funds to train more physicians in cardiology and establishing one of the few heart catheterization laboratories in Ethiopia.
