Ismail Akhalwaya

Mr Ismail Akhalwaya was appointed to his current position in June 2010. He holds a BCom degree in Economics and Business Economics from the University of South Africa, and a post-graduate qualification in Public Sector Management and Development administration from the University of the Witswatersrand. A key focus area for Mr Akhalwaya is the introduction of an institutional framework to assess the management practices in national and provincial departments. He is also responsible for managing one of government’s key strategic outcomes focusing on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the public service. Mr Akhalwaya has been in national government since 1997, serving as a senior manager since 2001. He has worked for the Department of Labour in the skills development area, and played a role in developing the country’s first national skills development strategy.

His professional experience also includes working as a programme manager for the management of government’s Extended Public Works Programme, while at the Department of Public Works from 2004 to 2010.
