Johan Meyer
Executive Head: Projects & Technology Exxaro Resources
Johan has joined the current Exxaro Resources, called Iscor at the time in 1987.
He completed his Metallurgical Engineering studies at the University of Pretoria in 1991 and an MBA at the University of Stellenbosch in 2006. He also obtained a Total Production Management diploma in Japan during 2005 as well as an Advanced Management Programme at the University of INSEAD in France during 2014.
Johan started his career as an Engineer in training at Iscor in 1987 as a bursary student. During his career he has commissioned more than 10 metallurgical plants in the steel, stainless steel and titanium industry. He was later appointed as Manager, Process Technology on KZN Sands project where after he was appointed as Manager, Operations of the KZN Sands business during the 4 year start-up and commissioning phase. During the acquisition of the Namakwa Sands minerals sands business, Johan was appointed as Manager, Technology and business improvement at the Sands and Base Metals commodity business to ensure business integration, improvement and technology development.
Joining the zinc business in 2009 as Business Unit Manager of Zincor, the only Zinc refinery in SA, Johan successfully ramp-down the operation and subsequently closed the business at the end of 2011. Leadership and change management capabilities resulted in achieving zero harm, operational excellence, satisfied customers and achieving goals with motivated people to the end. Johan was then appointed as General Manager Technology for Exxaro in 2012.
Johan has been appointed as Executive Head Projects and Technology and member of the Exco in April 2015. Key accountabilities include the resource and reserve statements of Exxaro Resources Ltd including all optimisation of the life of mine plans and strategic value adding activities. Delivering more than R20bn coal growth projects in the 5-year period have been a major milestone in his career. All these mega projects for Exxaro delivered safely, within schedule and budget. His current focus as executive is supporting the implementation of the Exxaro Minerals strategy. He is passionate about leading people and powering better lives.
Johan looks forward in contributing as a thought and strategic leader in Exxaro and South Africa to make a meaningfull contribution in people’s lives. Johan has recently been certified as a Certified Director at the Institute of Directors of South Africa (IoDSA).
He is married to Nicolene, who is a full-time professional photographer. They have two sons (21 & 24 years) and a daughter (12 years) and are supporting them with life skills and education to enable them to live their respective dreams in life.
