Johannes Mudimu
Vice-Admiral Johannes Mudimu was appointed Chief of the South African Navy in 2005. He holds a Master’s degree in Military Science and an Honours degree in Public Management and Governance, together with qualifications in safety and security, human resource management, personnel and training, and journalism.
Vice-admiral Johannes Mudimu received military training in Angola, East Germany and the former Soviet Union and served as an instructor in various Umkhonto weSizwe camps. He completed his commander’s course in 1977. Back in South Africa, Vice- Admiral Mudimu completed the joint staff course, the navy senior command and staff course as well as the Senior Management Programme at the University of Stellenbosch. He has completed all military courses prescribed for senior officers since 1994 and in 1998 was appointed to the South African Navy, with leadership roles including inspector-general and chief of fleet staff. In 2000 he was promoted to the rank of rear-admiral and appointed as chief director: Maritime Support, later known as Chief of Naval Staff.
