John Oliver Fanfan
John Oliver Fanfan, known as Oliver, is the founder of Island Bio, a social and non-profit enterprise, which establishes community integrated farms throughout the island of Mauritius. In doing so, the enterprise alleviates poverty through the holistic empowerment of marginalized citizens in a self-help approach and to bring health justice to middle and working class citizens through alimentary sovereignty which we consider as having the power to choose between our food type (organic or chemically treated) irrespective of our relative purchasing power. John Oliver Fanfan advocates that the access to healthy food will have a positive impact on the national cancer rate which professionals claim to be the highest among African countries. Oliver is deeply engaged in helping underprivileged communities in Mauritius. He is also the vice-president of the Fraternité Nord Sud non-governmental organization, which caters to illiterate adolescents who come from deprived backgrounds. In the future, he hopes to set up an alternative pedagogic school for underserved youth. By 2021, Oliver aims to set up an agroforestry farm in an effort to prove that alternative approaches are beneficial to underprivileged children in the school system.
