Mphoza

Mphoza is a hit-maker. His intuitive understanding of what works on the dancefloor translates into tracks which emanate energy and emotion. He worked closely alongside Giggs Superstar on his SAMA-nominated album and featured Mi Casa’s front man J’Something long before the group got showered with awards. Euphonik, DJ Fresh, Oskido, DJ Zinhle, DJ Sbu, DJ Mandla and the late Brett Jackson have given Mphoza’s tracks their stamp of approval by releasing them on chart-topping compilations and championing them in clubs around the country.

The hit track of the album – Mphoza’s “Moove”. The track was accompanied by an animated video and the results were explosive, cementing Mphoza as a new force in house music. “Moove” joins “On&On” and “Boogieman” in his arsenal of chart-destroying anthems.

Mphoza’s reputation as one of the finest young talents has placed him alongside industry leaders behind the decks and at conferences like the South African Music Conference (2010) and the North West Arts Conference (2011). Mphoza has also worked on remixes for respected international producer Atjazz and French house icon Claude Monnet (alongside Culoe De Song).

Mphoza’s music is undeniable on a dancefloor— big slabs of bass and delicious rhythms make his productions feel like classics from the first note in. Years of in-studio experimentation has forged a signature sound that merges solid 4/4 dynamics, early deep house influences with Mphoza’s own innovative melodies.

Mphoza’s passionate love affair with music becomes apparent when you speak to him. His enthusiasm is so real that it almost reaches out and grabs you. “House has an amazing way of bringing people together and creating a mood. It’s powerful.” he says.

Music was an ever-present force in the Motloung household. His father and grandfather both had big record collections— and his childhood was saturated with jazz and soul. As a choirboy Mphoza started becoming aware of music’s mood-altering capabilities. Then, as a teenager, Mphoza was introduced to house at school socials. “When I heard house music,” he explains, “everything changed. I’d never seen music have such a powerful effect on people. Everyone was connected and having fun”.

House music expanded in Mphoza’s life eventually becoming his focus and future. He quickly picked up DJ skills but felt the urge to express himself through the music in a more direct way. “I wanted to merge all my favourite elements and create something original”. Mphoza spent many months building his repertoire of skills and made the leap from DJ to producer.
