Nancy Elsie Chawawa
Nancy Elsie Chawawa has over six years of experience in the civil service. Nancy works as an environmental district officer under the Environmental Affairs Department. Nancy coordinates all environmental, climate-change management, and disaster-management activities at district level. She also provides technical support and advice to communities and various stakeholders. In addition, she actively participates in role modeling for women and young girls, motivating them to pursue their careers and to become empowered. Currently, Nancy is pursuing a PhD in Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (Environmental Sustainability) at the University of Edinburgh. Her research is on farmers’ self-perceived vulnerability to disasters and local adaptation. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Sustainable Development from the University of Leeds, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of Malawi. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Nancy intends to enhance the effective implementation and review of environmental policies.
