Professor Malegapuru William Makgoba
Professor Malegapuru William Makgoba (Non-Executive Director) is a leading South African immunologist, physician, public health advocate, academic, former vice-chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal and former President of the MRC (SA). In 2013 he was recognised as “a pioneer in higher education transformation”, by being awarded the Order of Mapungubwe in Silver. He is the national Health Ombudsman and the Deputy Chairman of the National Planning Commission.  Professor Makgoba obtained a PhD in Human Immunogenetics from Oxford University in 1983, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (M.B & Ch.B.) from the former University of Natal (1976) and is a Member of the National Academy of Medicine (USA).
Prof Makgoba is internationally-recognised for his contribution to advances in science and health.  His skills and competencies are that of being a recognised leader, driving transformation, addressing complex issues relating to Planning, Government policy translation, Ethics, Corporate Governance and Human Resources.
