Smowkey Nyembe
Smowkey Nyembe is a Savanna comic choice award nominee. In the non English category. He is also playing a lead role in a movie S’popile. Which will premier late 2015. He is also part of the 1st Johannesburg International Comedy Festival.
Smowkey Nyembe who’s real name is Mbongiseni Nyembe. Born and bread in Soweto at a place called Meadowlands, had his first stand up comedy show in May 2010 at Ozone Pub at the “Premium Comedy Nyts” hosted by Kedibone Mulaudzi which he got a warm welcome from the audience. He then got invited by Mashabela Galane to perform in Polokwane “Meropa Casino Comedy Wednesday” and got his first standing ovation in just two months in the game.
Later in 2010 he was part of a television series called “Opening Guys” which aired on Mzansi Magic. The series featured the winner of “So You Think You Funny” season one Sifiso Nene and was hosted and narrated by Kagiso Lediga. Smowkey’s biggest highlight in 2010 was when he was the face of the Spanish team where he narrated the buildup for the 2010 Fifa World cup final in South Africa.
Smowkey Nyembe has hosted and performed in a number of festivals to date. The fouth, fifth, sixth and seventh Soweto Comedy Festival, The Tswane Comedy Fest, Polokwane Comedy Jam Festival, The Arts Alive Festival. The 99% Zulu Comedy. He also hosted the 2010 and 2011 Street population Soweto Music Festival which had the likes of Thandiswa Mazwai, The Soil, 340ml, Simphiwe Dana just to name a few.
Doors started to open and more shows were coming for Smowkey which landed him a spot as resident host at the Polokwane comedy nights and the Morula sun comedy nights.
Smowkey has now been on radio and tv for interviews also presented a music show on Soweto Tv called “Kasi Music Tv” “KMT”. He has become a household name in his hometown and other parts of the country with his raw kasi style snobbish comedy. He is now a music tv show host which airs every saturday night at 22:00 called “SoweTop 10” on channel 251.He is a must see on stage and takes his art form very seriously and to heart. He will never compromise his work nor sell himself short, that’s why his motto will always be “Comedy Is Not A Joke”
In 2014 Smowkey Nyembe headlined the last 5 99% Zulu and Xhosa comedy shows, not forgeting his major standing ovation performance at 2014 South African Traditional Music Awards as the closing act of the event.
