Umar Faruk Kabir
Umar Faruk Kabir has over six years of experience in criminal justice system administration. He has a passion for alternative dispute resolutions (ADR), prison system decongestion, and information and communication technology (ICT) in the legal profession. Currently, Umar Faruk is a magistrate at the Senior Magistrate Court Funtua in Katsina State, Nigeria, where he presides over cases under the penal code law, children and young person’s law, coroners Law, district court law, and road traffic law, among others. He has granted bail to approximately 600 inmates awaiting trial and leniently sentenced over 200 convicts to pay fines rather than face imprisonment. Umar Faruk holds a bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria, and a professional qualifying certificate (BL) from Nigeria Law School in Bagauda, Kano State. He hopes to become the chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) of an incorruptible and independent judiciary. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Umar Faruk hopes to implement his gained leadership, knowledge, skills, and experience in the administration of a criminal justice system without fear or favor.
